Valuable Takeaways from My Most Recent Read: The Fault in Our Stars

“Mom, you should read this book.”, said my son. Previously he had suggested The Lighting Thief, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I enjoyed that book and the sequels very much. This time he gave me The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. “I think this one is a current Bestseller. Is it another Young Adult book?” I asked and he nodded in the affirmative.

“By the way, the movie is coming out on 6/6. Finish the book and we can go to see the movie together,” he suggested. Wow, my son just invited me to see a movie with him. I’d better start reading, I thought.

A Child’s Love on Mother’s Day

My son, Joey, sent me the following image and wished me a Happy Mother’s Day.  He is a child with a wicked sense of humor.  KFC is his favorite fast-food restaurant and my least favorite.  He thought it’s certainly proper and fitting to e-send me a bucket of fried chicken.  Thank you, Joey.  I feel the love.

Discussing Post High School Options with Your Kids

I had an insightful chat with a friend who is a successful small business owner. His daughter just turned 17. They are currently in discussion about her college options. This girl is very lucky that my friend has set aside $150,000 college fund for her. He has been saving aggressively since she was born.

Instead of talking about which college she should go to, they changed the conversation to what is the best way to use the $150,000 for her.

Coping with Disappointment: The Rule of Sevens

My son has had a crush on a girl for sometime and, while driving him to school the other day, I nudged him once again to ask that girl out. He very much wanted to ask her out, but was afraid of being rejected and ruining the friendship. I encouraged him to “just do it” and he kept telling me that the time is not right yet.

Next time when I brought the topic up again, he told me quietly that he did ask the girl out a couple days ago, but the girl politely declined. I turned around and looked at him. He maintained a smile, yet looked a little sad. As a mother, I asked him if he was OK. He told me that he was very disappointed initially, but he was certainly much better.

Can You Let It Go?

Originally published in the Huffington Post on January 14, 2014.

Do you remember the thrill of riding a roller coaster? I would yell and scream and fully take in the ecstatic experience.  When the ride was over, I got off and savored the moment by saying “That was AWESOME!” Then, I let it go.

Death, Cancer, 2014 New Year Resolutions

NY2014blog

A young colleague’s passing and two colleagues’ illness make me ponder my 2014 resolutions.

I received an e-mail that a dear colleague passed away today.  Her passing was not a surprise; she has been fighting recurring cancer for the past two years.  Yet, I was overwhelmed with grief for the rest of the day.

Ten Things I Love About Portland

I wrote a blog last week: Ten things I love about Amsterdam, although I was only in that city for less than 48 hours.  It was well-received!  I thought why not write ten things I love about Portland, since I’ve lived here for almost two decades?

My visit to the Van Gogh Museum

What a sunny and chilly day in Amsterdam!  8°C outside and I forgot to pack my winter jacket.  It was COLD!  I covered myself in layers of clothes as I was determined to venture out for a brisk walk and then visit the Van Gogh Museum.
